“Yoga is the union of the individual self with the universal self.” BKS Iyengar
Iyengar yoga is a form of Hatha yoga that focuses on the structural alignment of the body through asanas (physical postures) and pranayama (breathing practices). It aims to unite the body mind and spirit for health and well-being. This discipline is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern day life. Iyengar yoga is characterized by great attention to detail and precision of alignment. This form of yoga has pioneered the use of various props such as belts, blocks, blankets chairs etc. to make the poses accessible to those who are unable to fully achieve them and to help practitioners to have greater understanding of them. Iyengar yoga is widely practiced in many countries including the USA, Australia and many European countries as well as India.
B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014), the founder of Iyengar yoga was still practicing at age 95 shortly before he died on the 20th of August. He had been teaching for more than 80 years. In 1966 he published his comprehensive book “Light on Yoga” with detailed instructions for over 200 asanas (postures) and several pranayamas (breathing practices). This has come to be considered ‘the modern yoga bible’ by many. It has been translated into 18 languages and he has since written 14 more books including “Light on Pranayama”, “Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali” and “Light on Life”. He has inspired thousands of yoga students and teachers all over the world to perform and break barriers leading to physical, mental and spiritual transformation. He was loved by thousands of students and teachers spanning the globe and will be greatly missed. But he and yoga will live on in his teachings.
